A rapid strep test involves a quick throat swab that can, within minutes, show the presence of group A streptococcus bacteria that causes strep throat and other infections such as scarlet fever, abscesses and pneumonia. Strep throat is a bacterial infection that affects the back of the throat and the tonsils, which become irritated and swollen, causing a sore throat that’s especially painful when swallowing. If the test is positive, antibiotics can be prescribed to treat this infection.
